Better then late than never. Here goes, my completely biased picks on what to do tonight at Art Walk.

CoWork Jax’s First Art Walk

If you missed the Grand Opening, do go check out the CoWork Jax space. It’s gorgeous! You will literally feel more productive and inspired just by looking at it. Not even one week old, CoWork Jax is Downtown’s first collaborative workspace and innovation factory. It’s a place where freelancers, start-ups and entrepreneurs can work without having to pay rent on a traditional office. Plus, it is a place for the city’s most creative minds to work next to one another and facilitate easy collaboration. It’s sick, trust me. They’ll be kicking off the Innovate Northeast Florida Happy Hour at 5:30 and feature art from the homie, Mark George as well as Darryl Bunn. The spot is 5 W Forsyth above Perdue.

Awaken the Dragon Vegan Dinner

I ain’t no vegan, never will be. I love meat, it’s delicious and I will nevera apologize for eating it. I would rather die than live without bacon. That being said, I can dig vegan food from time to time when it’s done well. And Dig Foods does it very well. The’ve gone pan-Asian this month to ring in the Year of the Dragon. Also check out art from the homies, Crystal Floyd and Shaun Thurston plus vintage treasures, handmade jewelry and Burro gear at the Whistling Princess Boutique. Hoorah Downtown retail!

Art Walk Music Showcase

More bands playing this show than I have time to name! Literally all over the place. A little something for everyone. Trying to stick as closely to the itenerary as possible so chek out the event page and come and go as you please or stick around and watch them all, they’re all worth it!

Do want to draw special attention to the homies, Mountain Folk (MTN FLK), from Orlando. Powerful post-screamo with a Southern twist. It’s a show worth watching and it’s happening last so stick around or just come late. Either way, it don’t matter to me…

Unchained Tour Busses Into Jacksonville

A good friend of mine is the producer for the Unchained Tour, a traveling performance event that features modern-day raconteurs telling unique and engaging stories through spoken word, music and acting. Samita hit me up to help her find a location here in Jacksonville. Chamblin’s Uptown would have been great but the venue was just too small. She enquired about Burro Bar, but at the time we didn’t really have the seating capacity. I suggested she check out Thief in the Knight, the retail space at the Knight Building next to where Chew used to be. They’ve been doing some really cool things there during Art Walk lately and it seemed like the perfect place.

When I agreed to assist Samita in Jacksonville, I was just trying to help out a friend. I told her I’d do what I could to promote but when I finally got around to checking out what the production was about, I realized that this was really something special!

The Unchained Tour is the brainchild of novelist and storyteller, George Dawes Green. The Georgia native wrote two novels that have been adapted into films starring Samuel L. Jackson, Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin (The Caveman’s Valentine and The Juror). Most notably however, he is the founder of the Moth, the storytelling organization that hosts storytelling events and has its own Peabody Award-winning NPR radio program. Although not directly affiliated, the Unchained Tour shares similar objectives and inspiration with The Moth.

The “raconteurs” will be traveling from town to town in a ’72 Bluebird schoolbus as they tell their stories across the Southeast. They have an impressive lineup of performers from various walks of life with their own storytelling methods. Here’s a few:

Peter Aguero – lead vocalist for the BTK Band, “NYC’s hardest drinking improvised storytelling band”

Elna Baker – writer and comedian, who has appeared on This American Life, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and written for ELLE, Glamour and Men’s Journal. She’s also Mormon.

Joan Juliet Buck – former editor of French Vogue and accomplished writer whose essays have graced the pages of Condé Nast Traveler, Vanity Fair, W and the New York Times.

George Dawes Green – Moth and Unchained founder himself

Edgar Oliver - actor, poet, playwright

Shovels and Rope - “sloppy tonk” country blues band

THURSDAY – JANUARY 19TH

DJ PARTY PHILLIP + DEATH PROFESSOR @ BURRO BAR

Death Professor is my new DJ handle. Phil and I will be spinning a hodge-podge of obscure stuff from our vinyl collections. We’ll keep it dancey and fun with some garage, psych, world music as well as new and vintage goodies you’ve probably never heard before. It’s not going to be the most happening thing going on on a Thursday night but it will be fun and different and you’ll hear some new stuff that you just might like so come out and chill!

FRIDAY – JANUARY 20TH

ORBWEAVER / SLASHPINE / NAHKIEL / IMPURITY / VOMIKAUST @ BURRO BAR

Eargasm Booking presents some of Florida’s sickest Black Metal bands with a little Death Metal for good measure. Please note that although the flyer says the show is at the Phoneix, it has been moved to Burro Bar. I’m really stoked on Slashpine personally and it’s Nahkiel’s first show featuring members of Imperial Conquest, Secrets She Kept, Saturnine, Torched Ebony Skies, Vomikaust, Cursed Ruin, Necropia. Orbweaver features members of Hate Eternal, Gigan, and SWWAATS. who I interviewed a while back for EU. It’s gonna be brutal.

LAURIS VIDAL / MATT BURKE / MICHAEL CLAYTOR / DEVON STUART @ BURRO BAR

This lineup is full of people who grew up listening to punk and decided to go folk. Lauris Vidal comes from DeLand and has something really neat going on that reminds me a bit of kLob vocals mixed with Elvis Perkins plucking. Matt Burke is of Bradenton, FL’s Have Gun Will Travel and Devon Stuart is of Outlaw Country group, The Takers. Joining them all is Michael Claytor of Gainesville.

2012 DeLand Comic & Collectibles Show

The other day I offered Steve, the manager at Universe of Superheroes, to contribute some comic-related content to their blog when they get the new website up and running. I’ve flirted with comic reviews on this site in the past but never felt they got the attention they deserved. I’m excited to get back into it, if for no other reason than to force myself back into making weekly trips to the best little comic shop in Jacksonville!

I was going to wait until everything was set up before I resurrected The Pull List, but an opportunity to get back into not only comic-related posting, but personal blogging in general fell into my lap. On Saturday I was perusing my Twitter feed when I noticed that Greg Rivera, President and Co-Owner of Mishka NYC, was going to be at a comics and collectibles show in DeLand on Sunday. First of all, Mishka not only accounts for over half of my wardrobe these days, it’s also an amazing lifestyle brand that I admittedly attempt to emulate with about 90% of my marketing efforts. It’s been a goal of mine for some time to work on some sort of collaboration between BURRO and Mishka and recently, through the efforts of my gregarious, convivial best bud, Zack Fortune (aka FUROCHE), that dream has come closer to fruition, although the details of which are both classified and essentially nonexistent. Recognizing the rare and fortuitous opportunity to interface with the founder and builder of my most revered brand, I @ replied him via the BURRO Twitter account enquiring as to the specifics of the wares he would be peddling at said event, to which he replied:

All I needed to here! A golden opportunity had presented itself to meet Greg personally and see what we could make happen while simulataneously providing some content for the blog. Plus, believe it or not, I had never been to a comic show before! I made arrangements to borrow a vehicle and departed for Central Florida.

The event was the DeLand Comic & Collectibles Show, hosted by Central Florida Collectibles whose mission I can appreciate.

CFCollectibles was created to bring back the fun, medium-sized, inexpensive show that got lost in the e-Bay, internet decade. We want to bring back that face-to-face seller/buyer interaction where you can handle the item you are buying, not look at two photos and have to guess at its condition. We want you to be able to meet a few artists or celebrities without having to pay “an arm and a leg” for an autograph. And most of all we want to provide all this for less than what you typically pay for shipping on eBay!

The show was held at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, a surprisingly well-equipped facility that seemed to be hosting multiple shows that day. The comic and collectibles show was housed in one of the smaller buildings and boasted somewhere around 30 or so vendors and a few creators and guest “celebrities,” most of whom I was not familiar with.

I made my rounds, checking out some of the different booths before approaching Greg and was pretty impressed with what I found. I didn’t really have the patience to flip through boxes of comics, especially since I wasn’t looking for anything in particular but there were tons of cool toys that brought back plenty of childhood memories and several newer ones that I drooled over as well.

I got so excited over these He-Man figures and Skeletor’s Castle in particular that I texted my little brother the pic. Our uncle bought us that play-castle with rat-face microphone when we were kids and it remained at our grandmother’s house for years, until someone got rid of it all. Wish we would have had the foresight to keep all that stuff!

Damn near copped a few of these Blackest Night badboys.

And this SD Comic Con exclusive Flash was calling my name too.

It took every bit of will power I had not to snatch this old Creepy book and Wolverine #1 in Near Mint Condition!

I did end up going home with a nice stack of Garbage Pail Kids cards and these G.I. Joe Mighty Muggs which are now perched above my desk.

I met up with Greg and we talked shop for a bit. While nothing is solid yet, whatever we do come up with is going to be some next-level shit, I can tell you that much. Turns out ol’ boy is about as approachable and down-to-earth as they come, not what you might expect from the head of ~~one of~~ the most happening apparel brands in Brooklyn.

CFCollectibles will be hosting another show in Largo on March 18th. I’ll probably just wait until the next DeLand show but now that I have some new items to collect, I will be checking out every show I can make it to between here and Orlando from now on!

Dream a Little Dream Love For Me

Taylor Ross is one of Jacksonville’s youngest and most talented musicmakers. He’s fronted/participated in numerous projects including The Picayunes, Reverse Cowboys and several more. He also runs his own independent tape label and blog, Noise Horror. His latest endeavor, Dream Love is a weirdo-synth, bedroom psyche, disco duo out of his new home of Tallahassee.

Although all of his bands have been of considerable merit, Dream Love has garnered the most attention including that of taste-maker blogs such as No Modest Bear. With a full-length on the way, Dream Love currently has two cassingles available for sale and download over at Noise Horror HQ. NH008 is a split with Phillip Casey Cardona and NH010 is the Love Juice single. Both stellar!

I Can Haz Signature Messenger Bag?

One of the perks of being a partner in a messenger bag manufacturer is getting to provide my input into new designs and colorways. As we prepared to launch the Burro Spring 2011 Collection, I made some suggestions to the design that made the cut and I’m really proud of what we came up with. I have been begging for Chris to buy some red Cordura since forever and he finally relented. We got it in and I immediately designed a colorway to match my whip. Now it matches my bike and my new Buddy 125 scooter! So now, the “Diablo” Signature Messenger bag is available as a part of Burro’s Spring 2011 Collection. We’ve come a long way together, Burro and I and it all started here.

Oh yeah, we’re opening a bar. More on that later…

So yeah, there you go. The tour was cut short by two days when the van blew a head gasket somewhere between Memphis and Nashville. It was really sad to see her go, we had some good times in that thing and she’d been a good tour van for multiple bands over the years.

Chicken & Whiskey – Tour Recap Part I

In advance of the Kickstarter campaign Big Dunn, Bert No Shirt and I will be setting up, I thought I’d take the time to fill you in on some recent C&W news. Busy day so I’ll keep it brief and let the pics do most of the talking.

During Spring Break C&W hit the road to tour our favorite stretch of country, Florida to Texas. We did our first significant tour in this region last year and only had a few minor hiccups along the way pretty much limited to a calendar mix-up at our last show in Atlanta forcing us to drive straight home from Chattanooga. This trip started off without any complications. Until we hit Tennessee that is. We lost our trusty van in a little town called Brownsville between Memphis and Nashville. However it happened, we blew a head gasket, had to sell the van for scrap and rent a U-Haul to make it to Nashville before once again cutting the tour short (missing Atlanta again) and heading home.

It hasn’t stopped us though, we played an awesome show with State Champion after it all and are touring Florida again next weekend with Ill Tolerance. We’ll b eborrowing wheels for that but will soon be in need of our own transpo. The mechanic in Brownsville got BD all kindsa stoked on the Nissan Quest and he’s taking care of buying the next band-vehicle so that’s what it’s going to be. To raise some funds we’ll be launching a Kickstarter next week and setting up pickle jars around town for donations. Help us out!
